The United Kingdom’s Patrick Leonard and Norway’s Espen Jørstad are the winners of Event #59: $1,000 Tag Team, taking home a combined $148,067 in prize money besting a huge field of 913 teams.
Leonard and Jørstad faced off against Corey Paggeot and Jamie Kerstetter with the European duo overcoming an eight-to-one chip disadvantage to dislodge the Americans of their first WSOP bracelet.
“We were prepared for a really hard grind”
Patrick Leonard said after the victory:
“A lot of people had played solo for the last few days. Some had played four days by themselves, whereas we’ve probably played about 50:50. We were fresh and taking hours in, hours out, and when I was out I was studying and I knew what to do coming in, so that was our biggest advantage. We were prepared for a really hard grind. We had two coolers in our favor in the beginning and that got us up pretty good.”
The key hand in the heads-up was when Espen Uhlen Jørstad five-bet shoved Ace-Jack preflop forcing a fold from Corey Paggeot, securing Team Leonard a massive pot and the chip lead:
What a shove by @UhlenPoker in the $1K Tag Team!!@CoreyPaggeot pulls out all the stops, going for it with a 4-bet bluff, but @UhlenPoker sniffs it out and pulls the trigger to win the pot.
